Housing Information

Renting a Unit
Tenancy is determined by the Community Relations Committee, which is comprised of Members of the Gignul Non Profit Housing Corporation. The Committee meets on a regular basis to rank, review and select applications for tenancy.

Once a tenant is eligible, an appropriate unit selected, a Lease Agreement signed, and an occupancy date set, the Tenant Relations Officer will arrange a move in inspection. This inspection will include:
• electrical, heating and plumbing shut offs in the building;
• a review of common area regulations (if there is more than one unit); and
• go over a copy of the Tenant Handbook, which outlines the responsibilities of both Gignul and the tenant. The tenant is expected to read and become familiar with the contents of the Handbook.

At this point the tenant will be provided a set of keys to the unit and will officially become a Gignul tenant.

In the same manner as other property management corporations Gignul depends on its rental revenue to maintain its housing at acceptable standards. Therefore it is essential that all tenants respect their obligations to pay the rent on time. Rents payments are due in advance on the first day of every month. Failure to pay your rent in a timely fashion will lead to eviction.

To help you adjust to your new home and community, Gignul's Tenant Relations Officers are available to assist and direct you to local services, other Aboriginal service providers, information on the residential Tenancy Act, or other points of interest that may be of use to you in your surroundings. Tenant Relations Officers can also assist you with debt counseling.
